The Perama Cave is located just four kilometers from the center of the city of Ioannina, in the village of Perama, on the hill Goritsa. It is an important part of the natural ecosystem of the area and is one of the most popular attractions of the city.
The cave was accidentally discovered in 1940, during World War II, as the villagers were trying to find shelter from the bombing, and it is the first cave in Greece to be developed for tourism. The Cave of Perama belongs to the limestone caves and has 19 species of stalactites and stalagmites, an extremely large number. Also, in it, for the first time in Greece (1956), fossilized bones and teeth of the cave arctus were found.
The tour of the Perama Cave
Τhe audiovisual material in the reception area and the interesting tour give information about the rare palaeontological finds, describe its size and rarity and explain the long process of creation of stalactites and stalagmites. Indeed, this ongoing evolution is attested to by the drops of water that fall on visitors’ heads throughout the tour.
At the exit of the Cave, which is 25 meters higher than the entrance, the visitor enjoys a magnificent view of both the city of Ioannina and the legendary Lake Pamvotida, famous from the historical legend of Kyra Frosini and Ali Pasha. While following the trail back to the entrance of the Cave.
